Abundant Living

Trust in the Lord

We live in an uncertain world where things can change from moment to moment with little to no notice. You can go to work in the morning and are laid off that afternoon.  You can be married today and separated or divorced next year.  The economy fluctuates, impacting our retirement plans. A beloved politician can back policies that negatively affect you and your household.  It isn’t easy to be sure and confident in a world where everything has the potential to alter your life.

How does a Christian woman keep her bearings?  How do we stay steadfast, immovable, and always abounding (1 Corinthians 15:58) with so many diversions, distractions, and displacements around us?  We can’t place our trust in jobs, spouses, money, or politicians because we aren’t called to put our trust in those things. We are called to place our trust in Jesus Christ.

Trust in the Lord

It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man (Psalm 118:8, KJV).

The word translated “trust” in Psalm 118:8 is “chacah,” and it means, “to flee for protection; figuratively, to confide in: – have hope, make refuge, (put) trust” (see Strong’s H2620).

Unfortunately, many of us are guilty of placing our trust in people and things who can’t provide the assurances that Jesus Christ offers.  We can’t run to them for protection.  We won’t find refuge in them.  Nor can we place our hope or trust in them.  We shouldn’t put our confidence in our jobs, spouses, money, or politicians because they aren’t trustworthy. When we place our hope and trust in someone other than Jesus Christ, or something other than His Word, we set ourselves up to be disappointed or anxious.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus,” (Philippians 4:6-7, NASB).

The Lord is the only person who can provide the steadfastness and stability we need.  We need Someone upon whom we can always rely, who we can trust in a world filled with untrustworthy people.  We need Someone whose character and word are above reproach and who’ll do what He says He will do.

Jesus is Trustworthy

Jesus never lets us down. He never forsakes us.  He is trustworthy and faithful and is always looking out for our best interests.  You see, placing our trust in Jesus ensures the peace, joy, and stability we seek. Further, when we trust the Lord, we can have confidence that He will help us when we encounter various hardships.  We don’t have to be uncertain or unsure in this crazy world.  We can navigate life by the light of the Son, knowing that He will lead us with goodness and mercy.

My brothers and sisters-in-Christ, stop putting your hope and trust in things and people other than Christ.  Trust Him. Grab ahold of His hand and never let go. Trust Him with your marriage, children, jobs, money, health, and ministries.  Trust Him with your life.  Jesus is worthy of your trust.
